When creating a beauty care product, there are a lot of variables that need to be considered. One of the most important is the scent. If something doesn’t smell great, you probably won’t be open to trying it. At Living Proof, our fragrances are custom blended by expert perfumers to augment the experience our technologies deliver.

In the early stages of creating a new product, key information is communicated to the perfumer who is creating the fragrance. They need to know what type of product the fragrance is for, who is most likely to use the product, what sort of imagery or language describes the final product and a basic chemical understanding of the technologies we create.

The perfumer blends a complex mixture of sometimes up to a couple hundred ingredients to create the appropriate scent. The product development chemist at Living Proof then begins the evaluation process.

The approach used to evaluate the scent is multi-faceted. Consumer testing is done to determine the overall likability of the product’s scent and if it communicates the intended imagery. The product development chemist assesses the physical stability of the fragrance in the formula:

• Does the fragrance make the product cloudy?

• Does it make it too thin or too thick?

• Does it interact with other materials in the formula?

• Does the fragrance change the color of the product so that it is unacceptable?

• Does the fragrance meet all IFRA requirements?

These are just a few of the variables that need to be considered. When we are confident that the fragrance is stable, safe, and loved by consumers, the selection process is complete!
